The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) of the Indian government created NIFTEM. In its Vision paper for 2015, MoFPI envisioned the establishment of a world-class institution to serve a variety of stakeholders including entrepreneurs, the food processing industry, exporters, policymakers, the government, and existing institutions.
Under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, it is deemed to be a university (de-novo category). Sonipat, Haryana, India is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries of the Government of India.

B Tech, M Tech, MBA, and Ph.D. courses are among the academic program offered at NIFTEM. Admission to all courses is determined by national entrance tests. For admission to the NIFTEM B. Tech program, the institute accepts JEE Main entrance scores. B. Tech Admissions 2022 are open to candidates having a JEE Main rank between 25600 and 57700. Candidates must have a valid GATE score to be considered for admission to the NIFTEM M. Tech program.
